Hip Issues
Test Your Knowledge!
Question
Identify the cause of hip impingement as shown in the x-ray.
Answer
Cam impingement.
Usually seen in young athletic males. Those taking part in high-impact sports, like soccer, basketball and ice hockey during adolescence when the skeleton matures, have a higher prevalence of FAI when compared to non-athletes.
Observation:
- Femoral head/ neck is too broad ( anterolateral side).
- Decreased head to neck ratio
- Aspherical femoral head
- Decreased femoral offset
- Femoral neck retroversion
- This causes wear and tear at the chondro-labral junction, leading to cartilage delamination and labral separation.
