Assessment and Management of the Rotator Cuff - Test Your Knowledge!

My patient isn’t responding to an exercise programme, should I advise a steroid injection?

In this patient group, research evidence suggests that steroid injections might offer small, short-term benefit at best. But, there is concern for potential longer-term harm and the need for more subsequent treatment if steroid injections are offered.

So, we should be cautious before suggesting a steroid injection and make sure the patient is fully aware of all the issues. Furthermore, rather than defaulting to a steroid injection it might be helpful to consider other reasons why a patient might not be responding including exercise adherence, adequate time, lifestyle and their understanding of the problem.

How did you get on?

This question and answer is from Chris Littlewood, tutor on the upcoming online course 'Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation: Assessment and Management of the Rotator Cuff'. Read on for more help with these often challenging patients.....
