Are You a Match Day Physio?
Test Your knowledge!

A player in your team is type 1 diabetic.

What specific medical procedures should the medical team and the individual take pre-competition?

Initially on arrival, it is important to assess the players blood sugar level pre match, usually every 30 minutes.

Athletes often reduce their level of bolus insulin by 25-75% with a carbohydrate-containing meal 1-3 hours pre-match to ensure they can play without the need to eat more carbohydrate during the match. Low glycaemic index (slow release) carbohydrates such as porridge, pasta or noodles are ideal to try and reduce the possibility of hypoglycaemia.

As the medic pitchside it is important to carry a blood sugar machine and test strips, hypostop, glucagon pen (in case of hypoglycaemic collapse) and food such as grapes/sugary drink (high glycaemic index/fast release) and cereal bar/bread (low glycaemic index/slow release) to assist such a player who may develop diabetes related issues during competition.

How did you get on?

This question and answer is from Dave Fevre, tutor on the upcoming Online Mini Series Course 'Preparation, Acute Pitchside and Post-Match Injury Management for the Physiotherapist on Match Day'. Read on for more help on match day.....
